  1. 1Ihram and intention

    At or before the miqat, put on ihram and intend Umrah.

    • Bathe (ghusl) first if you can; it is sunnah.
    • Men wear two plain white unstitched sheets. Women wear their ordinary modest clothes, without a face veil (niqab) or gloves.
    • At the miqat, intend Umrah and say: Labbayka ʿumratan.

  2. 2Talbiyah

    Repeat the talbiyah often until you reach the Ka'bah.

    • Men say it aloud; women say it quietly.
    • Stop when you begin tawaf.

    لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ

    Labbayk Allāhumma labbayk, labbayka lā sharīka laka labbayk, inna l-ḥamda wa n-niʿmata laka wa l-mulk, lā sharīka lak

  3. 3Tawaf, seven rounds7×

    Seven rounds anti-clockwise, the Ka'bah on your left, starting at the Black Stone.

    • Be in wudu.
    • Each round starts and ends at the line of the Black Stone, marked by a green light on the wall. Face it, raise your right hand and say: Bismillāhi wa Llāhu akbar.
    • Men uncover the right shoulder during this tawaf.
    • Between the Yemeni corner and the Black Stone, say: Rabbanā ātinā…

    رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

    Rabbanā ātinā fi d-dunyā ḥasanatan wa fi l-ākhirati ḥasanatan wa qinā ʿadhāba n-nār

  4. 4Two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim

    Pray two short rak'ahs behind the Maqam, or anywhere in the mosque if it is crowded.

    • Cover your shoulder again before you pray.
    • It is sunnah to recite al-Kafirun in the first rak'ah and al-Ikhlas in the second.

  5. 5Drink Zamzam

    Drink Zamzam water and make du'a.

    • Coolers of Zamzam stand throughout the mosque.

  6. 6Sa'i between Safa and Marwa7×

    Seven laps, starting at Safa and ending at Marwa.

    • Approaching Safa, recite: Inna ṣ-ṣafā wa l-marwata min shaʿāʾiri Llāh.
    • On Safa and on Marwa, face the Ka'bah and make du'a.
    • Safa to Marwa is one lap; Marwa back to Safa is the second.
    • Men walk briskly between the two green lights.

    إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ

  7. 7Shave or trim your hair

    Men shave or trim; women trim a fingertip's length. Your Umrah is complete.

    • Shaving is better for men; the Prophet ﷺ prayed three times for those who shave.
    • Women do not shave; they trim the ends of their hair.
